Eugene Talmadge was elected governer of Georgia but died before he could take his place in office. His son Herman was elected and the LT. Governor was M.E. Thompson. Thompson said that Herman cheated his way into office by not counting some votes. The dispute was settled in court where Thompsom became Governor of Georgia.

The U.S. desegreated schools. U.S. said that it was unconstitutional to segreate schools. The reaction to this was instant and many white publishers said that the ruling was unconstitutional.

The state flag was given the addition of the confederate battle flag. The flag showed resistance to civil rights. This hurt the Georgia economy because it was labeled as offensive.

SNCC stands for Student nonviolent Coordinating Committee. The SNCC worked closely with the SCLC.
Four blacks in Greensboro, NC were denied service for months until the resturant finally gave up and served them. -
Hunter and Holmes were the first two African American students admitted to UGA, one of many segregated southern schools. This was brought up in court and they won the case. They both applied for classes soon after.

African Americans were not allowed to ride the busses in Albany, GA. They tried to get on peacefully but were arrested. Dr. Martin Luther King, JR. and a big group of people walked to city hall and prayed. Most of the protestors were arrested.

Some 250,000 people of all races marched to the Lincoln Memorial to hear Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. give his " I Have a Dream" speech. He spoke to end segeration.

Jackson was the first African Amercan elected as mayor of Atlanta. This sparked a lot of controversy, but that din not stop Jackson from still doing what he is supposed to do.

Andrew Young was a mayor of Atlanta when Maynard Jackson was Georgia's governor. He was a member of the SCLC and a good friend of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
