    Brown Vs. Borad of Education
    The Supreme Court rules the landmark case Brown v. Board of Education is unconstitutional. They agreed that segregation in schools is unconstitutional and the ruling on the case started a large part of desegragation.
  • Little Rock, Ark

    Little Rock, Ark
    At a all white high school nine black students were blocked from coming in. President Eisenhower sends federal troops and the National Guard to stop the nine students from entering. After this they were known as the Little Rock Nine.
  • James Meredith

    James Meredith
    James Meredith becomes the first black student to enroll at the University Of Mississippi. After enrolling at the U. Of Mississippi riots and violence cause President Kennedy to send 5,000 federal troops to the University.
  • Martin Luther King Jr.

    Martin Luther King Jr.
    Martin Luther King Jr. gets arrested and put in jail during anti-segregation in Birmingham, Alabama. This was when Martin Luther King Jr. wrote "letter from Birmingham jail" arguing that individuals have the moral duty to disobey unjust laws.

    About 200.000 people join in on the March on Washington. This is when Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous "I have a dream speech"
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    Civil Rights Act of 1964
    President Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The Civil Rights Act prohibits discrimination of all kinds based on people race, color, religion. The law also provides the federal governmenrt to enforce desegragation.
  • Bloody Sunday

    Bloody Sunday
    Blacks begin a march to Montgomery in support of voting rights but are stopped at the Pettus Bridge by a police blockade. Fifty marchers are hospitalized after police use tear gas, whips, and clubs against them. The incident was named "Bloody Sunday" . This march was the push through for the voting act five months later.

    Martin Luther King, at age 39, is shot as he stands on the balcony outside his hotel room in Memphis, Tenn. James Earl Ray was convicted of the crime.
