  • Brown - vs - Board of Education verdict is handed down

    The NAACP became involved with the Case Brown - vs - Board of Education; which challenged segregation in public schools. Rhurgood Marshall argued for Brown. His argument was that segregation lowered self-worth. Not right away did eveyone end segregation, not until 1955 when Supreme Court made are ruling to end it "at a deliberate speed".
  • Rosa Parks is arrested

  • SCLC is Formed

    Southern Christian Leadership Conference, a church-based African American organization working to end discrimination, focused on nonniolent protests.
  • Little Rock Nine able to enter Central High School

    The Little Rock School Board was the first in th South to announce that it would accept the Brown decision. The desegregation plan was set for September 1957, by accepting nine African Americans into Central High School. The Governor, Orval Faubus planned to have the National Guard to prevent attacks by protesters.
  • SNCC is formed

    Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee pledged to not use violence, even if they are attacked. King called it, "the force of hate with the power of love".
  • James Meredith admitted into the University of Mississippi

    James Meredith was an applicant of Ole Miss. After difficulty with the Governor. Meredith is accepted to the University of Mississippi and graduates the university in 1963.
  • "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" is written by Martin Luther King Jr.

    Written by MLK Jr. in 1963 while he was in jail. He wrote this letter to local religious leaders who had urged him to slow his protesting down.
  • I Have A Dream Speech

    MLK Jr. gave the final speech at the March on Washington. In this speech he spoke of what he saw the United States should be like.
  • 24th Amendment is passed

    This amendment banned the payment of poll taxes as a condition for voting in federal elections. This amendment did not apply to State elections, it only gave hope to civil rights activists.
  • Freedom Summer

    The SNCC recrutied volunteers on university campuses in northern states. The volunteers attended training in Ohio before going to Mississippi.
  • Three CORE members disappearing in Mississippi

    Andrew Goodman, James Chaney and Michael Scherner dissapeared and their bodies were found six weeks later in an eathen dam. Two of the men that were killed, were white. This shocked many people and was the turning point in Civil Rights.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964 is passed

    After the success of the March on Washington, hope was given to civil rights workers. The Act banned discrimination in employment on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. This Act was strongly supported by LBJ.
  • Malcom X is assassinated

    Three Black Muslim assassins, gunned Malcom X down after he had changed his views. Malcom displayed his Islamic beliefs, as well as breaking away from the Black Muslims.
  • March on Selma

    Also known as Bloody Sunday, and is marked as the emotional peak of the civil rights movement. All these marches where for the strive for voting rights.
  • Watts Riots

    Six day riots that resulted in 34 deaths, 1032 injuries, 3438, and over 40 million in property damage. To this day, the Watts Riots is the most severe riot until 1992.
  • Black Panthers are formed

    Founded in Oakland, CA; Huey Newton and Bobby Seale founded Black Panthers to fight police brutality. Their plan was to advocate self-sufficiency for African- Americans in ghettos. They believed that African Americans should be exempt from military service. They sent their messages through violent shoot outs with police.
  • Detroit Riots

    Began with a police raid of an unlicensed, after-hours bar then known as a blind pig. The riot broke out, and required the Governor to call in Army Troops.
  • Martin Luther King is Assassinated

    King was in Memphis Tennessee, and around six P.M. King was hit with a .30 bullet in his head. King was rushed to St. Joseph's Hospital and he was pronouced dead by seven P.M. Assassin was eleged to be James Earl Ray.
