This was a time where African Americans would fight for there rights and try to end racism thought the country. -
Emmett Till
Emmett Till was a 14 years old boy who went to visit his uncle down in the south, he was accused of saying "Bye baby" to a white cashier and was lynched shortly after. He was beaten then shot in the head with a pistol then thrown into he river. This caused a uproar in the African American community, and it inspired the Civil rights movement. -
Montgomery Bus Boycott
The Montgomery Bus Boycott was a peaceful protest against city buses. African Americans were tired of having to give up there seats/sit in the back of the bus to white people. The African Americans would refuse to ride the city buses and find other ways of transport, such as walking, biking, carpooling even black taxi drivers were lowering there prices for other African Americans. This protest lasted over a year (381 days). -
Little Rock Nine
The Little Rock Nine was a group of nine African American teenagers who went to in Little Rock High School (an all white school). They received hate, death threats and bulling. So much so they had soldiers stand with them. In the end one student graduated, they were told to not fight back although they desperately wanted to. -
Sit-ins
Sit-ins was a form of civil disobedience, African Americans used to integrate lunch counters. They would sit down at the lunch counters and refuse to leave. Drinks including hot coffee and food was poured on them, they were pulled of the chairs and beaten. They were called very mean and racist names. Sit-ins spread to 55 cites by that point, and eventually lunch counters were integrated. -
Freedom Riders
The freedom rides were a group of people who wanted to integrate interstate buses. Even though the cities buses were integrated interstate buses were not. They started at Washington D.C and planed to go throughout the south. The KKK stopped them and firebombed the bus, everyone was alright. Once everyone was off the bus they were beaten badly. But from that, they were able to integrate interstate buses and bathrooms. -
Children March at Birmingham
The goal of the children march was to integrate everything in Birmingham, Alabama which was the most racist city. They used children because they thought no one would be cruel enough to beat a child. Over a thousand children marched to end segregation, the first day they were arrested and filled up the jails so the police put them in the animal stalls. The second day the children were sprayed with fire hoses and attacked by police dogs. In the end they integrated the whole city! -
March on Washington
March on Washington was a peaceful protest, where 250,000 people marched for civil and economic rights for African Americans. And many great leaders gave speeches, but the most famous speech was from Martin Luther King Jr. called "I have a Dream" which wasn't even supposed to happened. -
16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham
This church was bombed by the KKK, and killed 4 little girls and 22 people were injured. The church was bombed by Robert Chambles. Many people were outraged by this, and over 8,000 people attended the girls' funeral. -
Freedom Summer
Most African Americans weren't registered to vote, because they were afraid of the KKK and things like the literacy tests. So college students went to the south and tried to convince African Americans to vote, they called to the freedom summer. Sadly during freedom summer James Cheney, Michael Schwerner, and Andrew Goodman were lynched by the KKK, but because of their lynching it increased awareness for the need of a voting rights act. -
Bloody Sunday
Bloody Sunday was a march that was 54 miles long. It took place in Selma, Alabama, it happened there because it had the lowest number of African American voters. The march was lead by John Lewis, they were crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge when a group of troopers were at the bottom, and told them to turn around. The African Americans were beaten, tear gassed, trampled etc. The next march MLK Jr. lead, and the same thing happened except MLK Jr. turned around and no one was hurt.
