  • Benjamin Mays

    Benjamin Mays was a graduate of Morehouse College. He became friends with Ghandi and learned about peaceful protest. He then spread that message to MLK Jr. when he became his mentor. He became the president of Morehouse College in 1940.
  • White Primary

    In 1945, two black people attempted to vote in a white primary when they were forcefully removed. THey, among others, then sued the state. Courts then said white primaries were unconstitutional. Ellis Arnall did not attempt to fight the ruling.
  • Election of 1946

    In this election, Eugene Talmadge was elected as governor of Georgia. When he died before taking office, three different people tried to take his spot in office. THese three people were Herman Talmadge, his son, Ellis Arnall, the out going governor, and Melvin Thompson, the lieutenant governor.
  • Herman Talmadge

    Herman Talmadge is the son of Eugene Talmadge. He was the Georgia governor in 1947 nd 1948-1955. He had very segregationist polocies. He was a democrat.
  • MLK Jr.

    MLK Jr. is one of the most famous Georgians. He was a leader of the civil rights movement. He spread ways of non-violent protest. He gave his famous "I have a Dream" speech at te March on Washington. He was the spokesperson for the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955.
  • State Flag 1956

    In 1956, the state flag was changed after the Brown Vs. Board court order to the Confederate Flag. They changed it to show their defiance to desegregation and how they felt towards black people.
  • SNCC

    The SNCC was made of students who worked for civil rights through peaceful protest. They were known for their sit ins and freedom rides. They were behind the failed Albany Movement. They also helped African Americans get into the Georgia General Assembly.
  • Sibely Comission

    After the Brown Vs. Board ruling, John Sibely held 10 hearings across Ga. THe purpose was to decide wether to follow the order or to close public schools. It found that 60% of Georgians would rather close the schools. However, Sibely pushed for schools to desegregate.
  • Albany Movement

    The SNCC attempted to protest segregationist polocies in Albany. It was a failure and many were jailed, including MLK Jr., but were let out shortly after. It was a failure, but a learning experience towards success.
  • Charlayne Hunter and Hamilton Holmes

    In 1961 they were the first black students to attend UGA. When they arrived on campus, there were riots. They were treated horribly during their time at UGA.
  • Civil Rights Act 1964

    This act came after the March on Washington. It was an anti-discrimination law. It forbade discrimination based on sex and race when applying for a job. It also affected being fired from a job.
  • Lester Maddox

    He was the last segregatonist governor in Georgia's history. He beat Elis Arnall for Governor in 1966. He elected more african american officials than all the other governors combined.
  • Andrew Young

    In 1961 he worked for SNCC. In 1972, he was the first black congressman since recostruction. In 1981. he was elected Mayor of ATL. He helped the city maintain growth.
  • Maynard Jackson

    Maynard Jackson was the first black mayor of a southern city. He was mayor between 1973-1981 and again between 1990-1994. He brought contract work to black owned businesses.
