    After hearing that Rosa Parks famous altercation on the bus, it had spawned the Montgomery Bus Boycott. which was lead by Martin Luther King,Jr encouragd the people to continue the protest, but remain peaceful.

    In little Rock,Arkansas,9 african americans,by the court ruling, were to be addmitted to Central High.Orval Faubus the Arkansas Govenor sought to prevent the integration from taking place. Due to the opposition toward the blacks, Eisenhower had the 101airbone division to escort the 9 kids to and from school.

    The Civil Rights Act of 1957 was intended to protect the african americans right to vote.Eisenhower firmly belvied everyone should have the right to vote, but if he was to send a bill to congress, the southern democrats would not let it pass.in 1957 Lyndon Johnson, was able to make a comprimise to let the bill pass,although it was much weaker than the originally intended

    4 young african americans,sat in a white-onlylunch counter ata department store and sat there until it closed.they said they would sit there until they were given the same service as the white men.once word got out, more and more joined in the Sit-in, and spread to other cities.mainly remaing peaceful, to all the opposition.With Ella Baker they made the Student Nonviolent Coordinationg Committee.

    1st freedom riders got on southbound interstate buses, when the buses arrived invarious cities. when they arrived they met many protesters that attacked them cutting tires, and throwing rocks.In Bermingham the freedom riders were met with a gang that visciously beat them. the the Comminsioner said there was no police since it was mothers day, though in actuallity he notified the local KKK to interven with the buses. The violence made national news and JFK wanted to get the violence under control

    James Meredith and the Desegregation of the University of Mississippi
    James Meredith, an african american air force veteren applied to transfer to the University of Mississippi. The university had avoided complying with the ruling of desegregating schools for a long time. He tried to register at the admitions office, but the Govener Ross Barnett preventing him from doing so. So Meredith had a court order to register him. SO JDK had marshalls ecort him to school, but they were met with a white mob and a riot broke, after James was escorted until he gradutated

    Since the events in Mississippi didnt make JFK push a new civil rights law, Dr.King shiwed him that the had a crisis,by luanching demonstrations in Birmingham, knowing it would prevoke a violent response. There the same Commisioner Bull Conner who attakced the freedom riders was running for mayor.8 days after the protest begun Dr.King was arrested and there he made the "Letter from Birmingham Jail." In which he said that theprotesters were following a higher moral law.then brutal police action

    When Dr.King realised JFK would have a hard time getting the civil rights bill to office, he and A. Philip Randolph agreed to a march on Washington. More than 200,000 demostrators of all races came to the capital. There DrKing said is "i have a dream" speech. The march did give the bil momentum, but some stilled tried to slow it down by dragging on investigations and delaying the votes.

    The bill did not pass through the senate so easily,it faced many filibusters that were countered by the clotures.And after JFK's assasssination many African americans where discouraged since Johnson seemed againted the civil rights movement. To their suprises Johnson devoted himseld to passing JFK's programs. then finally in 1964 it passed

    on August3, 1965 house of reprisentatives passed voting rights bill and the next day the senate passed the bill aswell.The US attorney general sent federal examiners to register qualified voters, bypassing local officals and suspending discriminating devices..by the end of the year almost 250,000 African americans registered to vote. The number of African American elected officials also increased. the act marked a turning point in the civil rights movement achieving 2 major goals.

    The Selma march was to give african americans voting rights.Even though Selma was maily amfrican american, only 3% were registered voters.To prevent them from registering to vote Sheriff Jim Clark had armed fellow white citizens to terrorize the demonstrators.in Dec,1964 DR.King won the noble peace prize for his works in the civil rights movement. the demonstrations led to 2,000 arrested, and Selma became a major story. to pressure the govt to act they walked from Selma to montgomery(50miles).

    the late 1960s, the civil rights movement had fragmented into multiple competing organizations.Some even encouraging violence,angering white civil rights supporters.in 1968 the SCLC had planned poor peoples campaign.on April 4 1968 while Dr.King was standing on his hotel balcony he was shot by a sniper. and the night before he said that as a people they will win, he just may not get to be there when it happens.His death made mourning and riots in more then 100 cities.It marked the end of an era
