  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    A African American girl was denied admission to her school because of her race. The school she was suppose to attend was in Topeka, Kansas. Since she was denied admission she had to go all the way across town for school. So later on her parents sued the school with help of NAACP.
  • Montgomery Bus Boycott

    The boycott was leaded by Martin Luther King Jr. The main goal of the boycott was for the Supreme Court to affirmed the decision of a special 3 judge panel declaring Alabam's laws on segregation on buses unconstitutional. Which lead to Rosa Park refusing to give up her seat on the bus.
  • Little Rock 9 and the Desegregation of Schools

    A school in Little Rock, Arkansas decided to make 9 African American go to an all white school. It was passed with a court order. The governor at the time was Orval Faubus. Eisenhower thought it was necessary for him to send troops there.
  • Malcolm X and the Civil Rights Movement

    Malcolm’s views were that the progress was taking too long he believed african americans needed to act faster.
    He broke with the Nation of Islam and he continued to criticize the organzation because of this he got shot by a member of the organztion
  • The Sit-In Movement

    The movement was lead by a group called student nonviolent coordinating committee. The group members were David Richmond, Ezell Blair, Franklin Mcain, and Joesph Mcneil. They tried to get the same service for lunch as the whites get. So for days they sat with white people. After this more and more people started to support.
  • Freedom Riders

    They were asked to travel through the south so they can draw attention to them for refusal to integrate bus terminals. They did not last long because they were brutally beaten up by a gang.
  • James Meredith and the Desegregation of Southern Universities

    James Meredith is a African American air force veteran.
    JFK dispatched 500 federal marshals to escort Meredith to the campus
  • The March on Washington

    This march happened because it was their alternative plan. During this march Martin Luther King Jr. made his very famous "I have a dream" speech. After this march the Civil Rights Act was passed.
  • Voter Registration Among Minorities

    After the Civil Rights act was passed voting was still not. Which led to the Selma march. At the Selma march many demonstrators were beaten by police forces. The voting rights act authorized the U.S. attorney general to send federal examinesrs to register qualified voters.
  • Urban Problems and the Black Panthers

    They lived in poor neighborhoods in the nations major cities were overcrowded which would lead to illnesses spreading.
    African american poliical organztion founded by college students. They believed that a revolution was necessary in the U.S.
