Plessy V. Ferguson
A supreme court case that marked the beginning and legal ratification of separate but equal.
It was important to the civil rights movement as many people(blacks) were unhappy with this ruling and wanted complete freedom and their unanimous rights. -
NAACP
It was made to protect and ensure the rights that are given to all American citizens also apply to the blacks.
A very crucial organization for the civil rights movement as many powerful leaders emerged from here. -
19th Amendment
It granted women the right to vote.
This was a sign for the civil rights movement as women could vote. They used this as fuel to gain rights for themselves. -
Executive Order 9981
This made segregation in the armed forces illegal.
This helped the civil rights movement kickstart and see progress. It was a huge step for blacks to be recognized as a part of the people supporting and protecting the country. -
Brown V. Board of Education
A supreme court case that made the previous Plessy V. Ferguson case null and made segregation in education illegal.
Although the blacks weren't given complete equality, they were at least making strides in the right direction. -
Emmett Till's Death
Emmett Louis Till was a 14-year-old African American who was lynched after being accused of offending a white woman.
This sparked huge debates on the actions taken toward black people, wrongfully, and fueled the civil rights effort. -
Montgomery Bus Boycott
People started boycotting buses as a black was denied a seating area.
The civil rights movement came to life because of this. Many of the constitutional laws have been broken and they were getting sick of it. -
SLCC
Was established in 1957 to coordinate the action of local protest groups throughout the South. It served as the headquarters of the campaign to desegregate the public. -
Little Rock 9
The Little Rock Nine were a group of nine African American students enrolled in Little Rock Central High. A huge step for the civil rights movement as more efforts were being made and recognized by the "American People.' -
Civil Rights Act of 1957
It increased the protection of voting rights for blacks.
It greatly helped the blacks increase their political views and prowess as many started running for political positions. -
Freedom Riders
The riders sang songs, made signs, and refused to move even though facing arrest, assault, and possible death. It helped in passing the civil rights act of 1964. -
24th Amendment
This allowed people to vote directly for the president, vice and senators, or any representative of the houses. -
Civil Rights Act of 1964
It prohibited discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.
Another victory for the civil rights movement as they were finally making progress outside of just the classroom and education areas. -
Voting Rights Act of 1965
It outlawed the discriminatory voting practices adopted in many southern states after the Civil War, including literacy tests as a prerequisite to voting.
Blacks were finally given easy access to voting without being discriminated against and were able t make an impact on the decisions of the country. -
Black Panthers
An organization for the civil rights of black people. Focused heavily on military action in order to get their rights.
Was a very controversial time for the blacks but they were also able t make a statement saying "We are willing to do whatever it takes". -
MLK Assassinated
MLK was assassinated. A huge upset for the civil rights movement and the world as a great leader was killed. It hugely changed the dynamic of what people thought and fueled the anger of many as well.
