  • Plessy v. Ferguson

    Plessy v. Ferguson
    Segregation on railroads had been an issue for sometime when Plessy stepped onto a train in 1892. He was fully aware that it was a white car and was ordered to sit in the African American car. He refused which caused Plessy to be arrested. When he was convicted on teh crime he went to an appelet court to over rule the conviction. He was turned down. The Court stated that train had every right to do what they did because they were being equal.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education
    In 1953 Brown v. Board of Education took place. A law suit filed the people based on the idea of segregated schools. The Supreme court sided with Brown and allowed African Americans to enter the white schools.
  • Emmett Till

    Emmett Till
    The murder of Emmett Till rocked the nation as it witnessed the brutailty of racism. Emmett Till's body was found in the water not far from his uncles house. His face was completely disfigured the only way the family could ID his body based on a infered timeline of his disaperence and finding a body. Till's body was shipped back to Chicago where his mothered ordered an open casket. The two men who'd came knocking on Till's uncle's door in the middle of the night were charged with murder.

    Little Rock School Desegregation
    After the Brown v. School Board the gov. issued that schools be intergrated. Nine students were chosen to enter a white school. They all were met on the first day of school by a crowd of angry people all who didn't want them to enter the school.
  • Greensboro Sit in

    Greensboro Sit in
    Four students came in from a local college to sit at a dinner. When the chose to sit at an whites only counter they were denied service because they were African American. They decided to stay till closing. The next day 20 people came and by the fourth 300 people showed up to protest the segregation.

    Nashville Sit in
    A group of over 150 people came into lunch ins and diners in the local area. Many were attacked by white onlookers. Then police stepped in and arrested them.
  • March on Birmingham

    March on Birmingham
    A march that was to be lead in a peaceful protest for the rights of African Americans was turned violent. People were sprayed with fire hoses and attacked by police dogs because they'd cause a disturbance.

    In 1963 250,000 people gathered to prostest peacfully equality and to have the gov. enact the Civil Rights Act.

    Civil Rights Act of 1964
    Lyndon B. Johnson enacted the civil rights act of 1964. After the peaceful protest to create equal rights for everyone people in congress felt the urge to create the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
  • Voting Right Act of 1965

    Voting Right Act of 1965
    After the incidences such as Selma and the investigation about the volunteers who went missing in Mississippi. The federal gov. wanted the southern states to know that segregation is not okay and all people should have their rights to vote as it is apart of the constitution.
