  • Plessy V. Furgson

    A law was passed that gave blacks and white the same accomodations but everything had to be seperate. Like in schools and buses.
  • Brown V. Board of Education

    In 1951 a class action suit was filed against the Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas. Schools at the time were segregated and it was not fair for the african american students that had to go a very far distance just to get to their school so schools had to start combining black and white students in schools.
  • Emmett Till

    A teenage boy named Emmett and his cousin came from Chicago to Mississippi to visit. Things in the North were way different than in the South in terms of racism and segregation. Emmett Till didnt know that and paid with his life when he whistled at a white lady at a store.
  • Montgomery Bus Boycott

    On December 1st 1955 Rosa Parks was areested for not giving up her seat to a white passenger on the bus. This was the beginning of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The majority of african americans in the city stopped riding the bus as a way to boycott segragation on buses. The boycott ended on December 20th 1956 because it was decided not to have segragation on buses anymore.
  • Little Rock School Desegragation

    African american students were going to start school where all of the kids were white. This caused mobs formed by outraged white citizens. Since it wasnt safe for the black students to be there a lone they were each assigned a soldier to walk around with them.
  • Greensboro and Nashville Sit-In

    Both these events were nonviolent ways to protest racial segragation. African American students involved in the Greensboro sit it sat in front of a restaurant because they were refused service. In the Nashville sit in many black students sat in front of many stores and were sometimes physically attacked by white people.
  • March On Washington

    On the month of March 1963 250,000 people marched all the way to the Lincoln memorial to hear Martin Luther Kings "I have a dream" speech. African Americans from all over the country came to see this speech that talked about equality and actual freedom for all african americans.
  • March on Birmingham

    This march was a movement that was organized to bring attention to the unequal treatment that african americans faced in Birmingham, Alabama. There were many confrontations between the black youth marching and the white authorities eventually the descrimination laws changed.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    Was an act that was passed that outlawe different forms of discrimination against racial, ethnic, religious and national minorities.
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

    The act was passed to allow anyone to vote. It didn't matter what race you were and the color of your skin did not matter either. It prohibited states from descrimination when it came to letting people vote.
  • MLK assaination

    MLK was a civil rights activist. He made the famous "I have a dream" speech and was involved in many civil rights movements. He was shot on April 4th 968 at the age of 39.
