    End of White Primary in GA
    The white primary was a way to keep blacks from voting. Many southerners used this system to keep African-Americans from voting. The constitution gave African-Americans the right to vote on 1946 because it was unconstitutional to keep them from voting.

    Eugene Talmadge was one of the worst governors. One of the GA colleges lost its accreditation because of him. He was also against the New Deal programs.
  • Brown vs. Board of Educaton

    Brown vs. Board of Educaton
    This case is based onthe important argument that black children were getting an unequal education. Teacher pay was lower, school building, textbooks, desks, chairs, etc., were worn out and inferior. It was hard for the teachers, and especially the students, to give and get a good education under these conditions.

    Atlanta was its headquarters. An organization of black and white college students. it was very important in the efforts to desegregate public spaces. Founded in 1960.
  • Albany Movement

    Albany Movement
    Began to desegregate Albany in Dougherty County. Protest marches happenned, and hundreds were arrested. Martin Luther King, Jr went to Albany to get publicity for the movement. This movement led to Afican-Americans having more power, although it did not resulted in the immediate chage many had hoped for.
  • Hamilton Holmes & Charlayne Hunter Accepted to UGA

    Hamilton Holmes & Charlayne Hunter Accepted to UGA
    They applied to the univercity every quarter, but were rejected. With the help of the NAACP and attorneys, they were accepted. They were the first blacks to be accepted to UGA, and went on to be the most accomplished.
  • March on Washington

    March on Washington
    Almost a quarter of a million Americans, black and white, marched on Wasington that day. this began on the Washington Monument and moved to the Lincoln Memorial. Prayers, songs, speeches calling for racial equality!
  • Civil Rights Act

    Civil Rights Act
    This bill made segregation in public places illegal. Restaurants, hotels, schools, libraries, etc., were all public to any race. Also, blacks could have jobs with whites. Everything was desegregated.
  • Election of Maynard Jackson

    Election of Maynard Jackson
    First African-American mayor in the South. His 2 terms changed economicopportunities for African-Americans in the city and made it an attractive city for upwardly mobile minorities.
