  • The Governor's Race of 1946

    Began with the death of Gov, Eugene Talmadge. In the wake of Talmadge's death, his suporters proposed a plan the allowed the GA legislature to elect a Gov. in Jan 1947. When the general assembly elected Talmadge's son as Gov, the newly elected lieutenant Gov. Melvin Thompson, claimed the office of gov,, and the outgoing gov., Ellis Arnall refused to leave office
  • Brown Vs. Board of Education

  • founding of Student Non-Violent Coordinating Comittee (SNCC)

    Began as an interraacial group advocationg non-violance, reflcecting nationwide trends in black activism.
  • Admission of Hamilton Homes & Charlayne Hunter into UGA

    They registered at UGA on Jan. 9, 1961.
    White students held protest at UGA because they did not approve of having black students there.
  • March on Washington

    *More than 200,000 americans gathered in Washington D.C for a political rally for jobs and freedom.
    *The event was designed to shed ligth on the political and social challenges African Americans continued to face across the country.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    Prohibits discrimination of the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.
  • The Albany Movement

    It protested against racial segregation. It resulted in the jailing of 1,000 African Americans in Albany and surronding counties.\
  • Election of Maynard Jackson

    First African American to serve as mayor of a major southern city.
    He served 8 years before going back to serve a third term in 1990.
    He also helped bring the 1996 Olympic Games to Atlanta.
