  • End of White Primary

    End of the White PrimaryBeginning of the end for the White Primary came with two events, one in Texas, the other in Georgia. The 1944 case of Smith vs. Allwright was the Supreme Court decision that ruled the Texas White Primary was unconstitutional. It forced Georgia to allow African-Americans to vote in the Democratic primary.

    1946 Governor's Race
    It was the first time that African-American's were allowed to run for governor.There were 3 people who wanted to run, Ellis Arnall, Melvin Thompson & Herman Talmadge It ended up having three governors.
  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    Brown vs. Board of Education
    This case argued that black children weren't getting fair education like the whites. It was quite easy to see how unfairly the blacks were being supplied education. The case ended and schools were told to end segregation.
  • (SNCC)Student Nonviolent Coordinating Comittee

    (SNCC)Student Nonviolent Coordinating Comittee
    It was an organization of black and white college students. The students did NOT like the way places were being segregated. It's purpose was to desegregate public places.
  • The Albany Movement

    The Albany Movement
    The movement's purpose was to desegregate Albany in Dougherty County. The Albany Movement got thousands of citizens and attracted nationwide attention but failed to accomplish its goals because of determination. Many were arrestd for participating in the movement.
  • Charlayne Hunter & Hamilton Holmes

    Charlayne Hunter & Hamilton Holmes
    Charlayne was an aspiring writer who wanted to go to UGA, but she was denied because of her race. In 1961, a judge ordered UGA to admit her and Hamilton Holmes, But still, Charlayne was isolated even though she was part of the school.
  • March on Washington

    March on Washington
    This is a protest like no other, it was a peaceful protest with no violence for desegregation. Wven though the protesters did no harm, the police sent out dogs and used fire hoseson the protesters. Over 3000 were arrested.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    Civil Rights Act of 1964
    This made segregation and racial discrimation illegal in publlic places. It also said that discrimination in any projects that used federal money was illegal as well. The act also said that discrimation against race, religion, natural origin, and gender was illegal.
  • Maynard Jackson

    Maynard Jackson
    He became vice mayor of Atlanta in 1969. Finally, in 1973, the 35 year old became the south's first African American mayor, His two terms has affected the city of Atlanta greatly, even to this day.
