MLK went throughout the south preaching the idea of nonviolent resistance. He wrote 'letter from a Birmingham jail" and in 1963 gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. Martin Luther King Jr. was shot and killed on April 4, 1968. -
Andrew Young worked with the SCLC and won GA's 5th district seat in the House of Representatives in 1972. He became the first African American since Reconstruction to be elected to Congress from Georgia. In 1981, Young was elected to be the city's mayor.
