Executive order 9981
This order made so that there could not be discrimination in the military. This is signifgant because it made blacks realize how bad they were being discriminated by everyone. -
Truman’s desegregation of the military
President Truman signed a executive order saying that segragation in the military is wrong. This is considered one of the major things that led to the civil rights movement. -
Brown v Board of Education
This law made it so that segragation in schools was no longer legal. This is signifigant because it ended a major part of segragation. -
Montgomery Bus Boycott
This event was a boycott against the busses for segragation. This is signifigant because it ended segragation on the buses. -
Little Rock 9
A group of 9 blacks who enrolled and tried to enter a segragated school. They were attacked and stopped by the national guard. -
Civil Rights Act of 1957
This helped make it easier for everyone to vote. The signifigance is that another part of segragation was taken away. -
SNCC formed
This was formed to support the anti segragation movements happening at the time. -
Greensboro NC Sit-in’s
These were protest where blacks would sit down at a segragated restauraunt and refuse to leave. This event is signifigant because it lead to the end of segragation in a big restaurant chain. -
Freedom Riders
They rode on buses throughout the south to protest the segragated buses. -
March on Washington – “I have a Dream Speech”
This was a mass protest on wahsington where Martin Luther King made his famous speech. This is considered signifigant because it is considered one of the biggest events that lead to the end of segragation. -
March from Selma Alabama
This was a protest where people went on a long march in order to protest for greater equality. Though things did not go perfectly, it is often considered an effective protest in the long run. -
(ERA) Equal Rights Amendment proposed & defeated
This was an event that would have made equal rights required regardless of gender. This is signifigant because it was a step towards equal rights for everyone.
