    Brown v. Board of Education
    Supreme Court outlaws school segregation in Brown v. Board of Education. This happened after the daughter of Oliver Brown was denied admission to a school.
    The court case that allowed separate but equal facilities was Plessy v. Ferguson.
    The events that happened in Topeka that led up to this case were that the schools were being segregated.
    The result of the Brown v. Board of Education case was that public schools could no longer be segregated.
  • Emmit Till murdered

    Emmit Till murdered
    Murdered for speaking to a white women. This happened in Money, Mississipii.
  • Rosa Parks Arrested

    Rosa Parks Arrested
    Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat for a white man. She was arrested on her birthday, and afterwards she had been active in the civil rights movement.
    During the event a white man wanted her seat and she refused to give it up for him. The police told her that if she got out she could leave with no charges, but she stayed in her seat, so she was arrested.
    Because she didn't give up her seat she was arrested, but also the civil rights movement had a large surge.

    After Rosa Parks was arrested the blacks in Montgomery decided to have a bus boycott, where they would not use the buses. This happened in Montgomery, Alabama.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1957

    Civil Rights Act of 1957
    Congress passed their first civil rights act in a long while, this one was a much further step closer to equality than any of the other ones.
    Congress had passed this law.
    This law stated that no black person could be denied the right to vote.
  • Events at Little Rock

    In Little Rock, Arkansas nine black students were admitted into the white high school. When they tried to enter the school they were met by mobs of white people keeping them out. Also the governor ordered state troops to keep them out.
    The federal government sent federal troops to let the kids in, this showed that the government was on their side.

    The freedom riders were a group of people of all races, that would go to segregated areas and try to desegregate some kind of public facility.
    Groups like CORE and SNCC helped organize the freedom riders.
    The freedom riders were of all races.

    James Meredith was a young black male that was admitted into Ole Miss and helped make progress in the civil rights movement.
    When Meredith tried to enroll he was blocked off from entering.
    The government got involved by forcing the school to let him in.
  • Medgar Evers Assassinated

    Medgar Evers Assassinated
    Medgar Evers was a civil rights activist and field secretary for the NAACP.
    He was shot in the back while he was walking to his house, his two children witnessed it happen.
    Evers was part of the US army during world war 2, he was on the beaches of Normandy. He lived in Jackson Mississippi, and his killer was a 72 year old white supremacist.

    The march was to shed light on political and social challenges that African Americans faced all over the country.
    The famous speech that was given at Washington, was the I had a dream speech, by MLK Jr.
    250,000 Americans took part in that march, and they were people of all races and genders.

    The law was passed by congress.
    The law stated that discrimination based on race, color or origin is outlawed.
    President Johnson was the one that signed it, also even after this many areas still discriminated blacks frequently.

    The result of the march was raised awareness and sympathy for black people.
    During the march they were attacked, and people saw it on National television, this gave the civil rights movement lots of support.

  • Thurgood Marshall appointed as a Supreme Court Justice

    Thurgood Marshall appointed as a Supreme Court Justice
    Before he was a supreme court marshall he was a successful lawyer that argued in the Brown v. Board of Education.
    He was the first ever black supreme court marshall, him becoming a supreme court justice made many black people aspire to climb the social ladder.

    During his assassination MLK was fatally shot in the head at the Lorraine Motel, in Memphis Tennessee.
    His death had such a big impact on all Americans because he was such an inspirational and peaceful leader.
