Montgomery Bus Boycott
This was when Rosa PArks disobeyed the bus driver by not giving up her seat on the bus. The front of the bus was reserved for the white people and the back of the bus was reserved for the African Americans. -
Creation of SCLC
This is the Sourthern Christain leadership Conference and it was formed after the Mongomery Bus Boycott. This Conference was held in the churchs because the church held a big role Afican Americans lives. -
Integration of Central High School
9 black students inroled into a all white highschool in Little Rock, Arkansas. This started the intigration of black students into white schools. -
First lunch counter sit-in
Four Afican americans sat down at a counter at Woolworth’s in Greensboro, North Carolina. They asked for service. There request was refused and was asked to leave. The Afican Americans did not leave and sat in thier seats -
Creation of SNCC
Also known as the Student Nonviolent Corrdination Comittee. This was founded in Releigh, North Carolina. It was to capitalize on the success of a surge of sit-ins in Southern college towns, where black students refused to leave restaurants in which they were denied service based on their race. -
Freedom Rides
black and whites traveled on busses throughout the south. The bus was fire bombed. This was in Albany. They rode the busses to try and get the bus laws changed. -
Birmingham campaign
It was a sitin that was attacked by poliece dogs and high pressure hoses in Bermingham Alabama. It was important because it was brodcasted on live tv. -
March on Washington
This walk had a big impact on history because Afican Americans walked to washington for JObs and Freedom. This happned when Martin Luther King made his "I have a dream" speech. -
Civil Rights Act of 1964
Congress outlawed segrication and gave African Americans the right to vote freely -
Freedom Summer
Also known as Mississippi Summer Project. This was a compaign in the United States to attempt to register as many Afican American voters. Also, this project set up a lot of freedom school, houses, and community centers. -
Voting rights act of 1965
This law was signed by President Lyndon Johnson to overcome legal barriers at the state and local levels that prevented African Americans from exercising their right to vote under the 15th Amendment (1870) to the Constitution of the United States.
