    Nonviolent Passive Resistance Movement
    Highlighted the desires of groups that felt that something needed to change to improve the current condition of the resisting person or group. Has sometimes been called the “weapon of the weak.”
  • Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Martin Luther King Jr. organized the Montgomery bus boycott in 1955. This began a chain reaction of similar boycotts throughout the South. In 1956, the Supreme Court voted to end segregated busing. In 1955, minister Martin Luther King Jr. led the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery.
  • Little Rock Nine

    9 African American teenagers attend public school for the first time. Students were initially prevented from entering the racially segregated school by the Governor. Governor Faubus sent the national guard to block the school off from the nine students.
  • Albany, Georgia Movement

    People living in Albany, Georgia started a campaign to end local segregation. Local leaders invited MLK Jr. to join the protest. Although it was still deemed unsuccesful by many followers.
  • Birmingham, Alabama Movement

    A KKK stronghold and described as America's worst city for racism by MLK. Freedom Riders drove through Birmingham and attacked and there were no police to help. Was more successful than Albany, Georgia.
  • March on Washington

    The March on Washington for jobs and freedom. Also known as The Great March on Washington, which was one of the largest political rallies for human rights in United States history. Demanded civil and economic rights for African Americans.
  • Selma to Montgomery March

    Martin Luther King Jr.’s SCLC made Selma, Alabama, the focus of its efforts to register black voters in the South. Protesters attempting to march from Selma to the state capital of Montgomery were met with violent resistance by state and local authorities. The protesters with protection of federalized National Guard troops finally achieved their goal.
  • Assassination of MLK

    MLK was shot in Memphis, TN. He was shot by a sniper on his hotel balcony. He was struck in his face and neck region.
