    • during this time the British sold opium to the Chinese and when the Chinese told them to stop they refused causing them to go into war. when the British defeated the Chinese they had to sign a treaty, "Treaty of Nanjing"

    Commodore Perry arrives in Japan

    -U.S. Commodore Matthew Perry took four ships into what is now Tokyo
    Harbor. These massive black wooden ships powered by steam astounded the
    Japanese.
    -The ships’ cannons also shocked them. The Tokugawa shogun realized
    he had no choice but to receive Perry and the letter Perry had brought from U.S.
    president Millard Fillmore.

    -Americans initiated this so European powers wouldn’t colonize China and shut America out of trade.
    -This made China weaker which ended up with Chinese backlash against foreigners, Chinese and American conflict with Japan and increased interest of East Asia by Americans.

People were tired of China’s open door policy so they wanted to change it. Took siege to the European nation of Beijing but were ultimately defeated due to lack of military aid.
