-U.S. Commodore Matthew Perry took four ships into what is now Tokyo
Harbor. These massive black wooden ships powered by steam astounded the
Japanese.

he had no choice but to receive Perry and the letter Perry had brought from U.S.
president Millard Fillmore. -

-Foreigners started to come into China and wreak havoc. The peasants were tired of foreigners getting special privileges. People were tired of China’s open door policy so they wanted to change it. The peasants started t society called the “ Righteous and Harmonious Fists”.They resented Christians and tried to make change . Took siege to the European nation of Beijing but were ultimately defeated due to lack of military aid. -
