Hundreds of communists were arrested and tortured, many were executed or assassinated. This event was a turning point in China's political development. Many people also consider this to be the start of the Chinese Civil War.

    The Mukden incident on 18 September 1931 began when an explosion destroyed part of a railway track near Mukden. The Japanese blamed the Chinese for this incident. This led the Communists and Nationalists to eventually unite against the Japanese.

It is called the Marco Polo Bridge Incident because after firing machine guns the Japanese Army then went after the railway bridge and eventually went to destroying Marco Polo Bridge. .

The massacre started on 13 December 1937 when the Japanese captured Nanjing. More than 20,000 females were gang-raped by Japanese soldiers. An estimated of 300,000 civilians were killed. This was one of the most tragic military debacles in the history of modern warfare.
