This event in Cheryl's life will forever affect the way she looks at life. Soon after her mothers death she begins to lead a life of drug use and loose sex. Overall causing her to go deeper into the depression that is her life.

    After the death of her mother, Cheryl Strayed has divoreced the man she still loves. To commemorate their relationship, she and her ex-husband have gotten matching tatoos. Now Cheryl is free to do whatever she wants, with no constrains, now she will never be with the one she truly loves. She continues to do drugs and tries to rid herself of the sadness due to losing her mother.

These "friends" that she has made will assist her in the strive to complete the trail. She also discoveres how people from such diverse backrounds can make the same decisisions she has made, both good and bad, thus regaining a part of her life back.

    Finally, Cheryl Strayed has the company of another person, the quietness of the trail has bittered her and yet strengthend her to where she now feels equal to her new companions. Cheryl will find these travelers and after, learns that they will help her through many of the challenges she still is unaware of. Cheryl is finding more and more about the walks of life that many of her new friends come from. Whether rich or poor, it is all about who is commited to completing the goal they have set.

    Cheryl Strayed crosses the Modoc Plateau
    The treacherous journey that Cheryl started has now led her to the Modoc Plateau, a desert that covers parts of California, Oregon, and Nevada. This segment of the PCT has proven to be most dangerous and capable of killing whom ever it wants. Though as Cheryl trudges through 15 miles she finds herself to be stronger than she thinks, making it to the first water source, unfortunately she is mortified to see it is empty, but moves on anyways to another reliable source and prevails.

    After the sudden dissapointment of her new boots being delayed for another five days Cheryl decides that it is time to move on with or without the new boots. She asks for the boots to be sent to the next location and continues. Soon enough, one of her original boots is lost in an abyss of trees, and the the other she throws over herself. she finally realizes that in order to live you must let go and accept the fact that"shit happens".

    After losing her old boot and realizing that this is life, that there is nothing you can do about bad or good things that occur. She arrives at the next location; the place where she can start anew begining with her brand new boots. This symbolizing that she has been given a second chance to walk the path of life and not have it be excruciatingly painful.

    Cheryl Strayed now stands in awe at the journey she endured. The fact that she is almost finished ,with what seemed like a lifetime, is almosst too much for her. She meets up with a many of her trail friends ,whom we encountered at the beggining of the book, and enjoyes her last week of the trail. Soon after reuniting with her comrades she ventures to the "Bridge of the Gods" alone, in order to complete the spiritual journey to which she found herself, and became stronger.
