On May 21, 1804 Wiliam Clark and Maryweather Lewis set out from St. Louis in hoping of finding an all water route from the Mississippi to the Pacific ocean. They did not find one but they made friends with many Indian tribes. They also discoved a ton of land to settle on. This was very important to the west because it would lead to gold discovery along woth other presious metals to make money.

The Santa Fe Trail is the main commercial route between St. Louis and Santa Fe. It was important to the West because it allowed companies to transport good from the east to the west.
