  • American School for the Deaf

    Founded in Hartford, Connecticut, and was the first of its kind in the western hemisphere. (T3)
  • First Major Institution for Wemon

    Catherine Beecher founded Hartford Female Seminary. This was one of the first schools that allowed higher education for women. At this time women only had small trades and cared for the children. (T1)
  • Perkins School for the Blind

    Founded in Boston, Massachusetts and kids were able to live and learn there for their benefit. (T3)
  • First College

    The first college was built and named Harvard College. Not very many people know about it. It was in Newtowne, Massachusetts. It was later renamed Cambridge. (T1)
  • Cheyney University

    Cheyney University, the first university of higher learning for African Americans. It still exists in Pennsylvania today.(T1)
  • Columbia Institution

    The first institution to be able to grant college degrees to students with disabilities. (T3)
  • Beattle v. Board of Education

    This trial gave way for students with physical disabilities to be able to go to school. Prior to this students were being expelled because other students and their teachers did not want to look at them.
  • Council for Exceptional Children

    The CEC was the first advocacy group for students with disabilities. The main reason for the group is so students with disabilities get FAPE. (T3)
  • The Monkey Trial

    John Scopes was a biology teacher at this time. He started teaching evolution to high school students and was convicted for it. This subject is still in question today. (T1)
  • SAT

    The first SAT was put on. It was made to see if students were ready for college. (T1)
  • Cuyahoga Council for Retarted Citizens

    Five mothers protest in Cuyahoga, Ohio for their kids being expelled from school. The kids later ended up getting special classes.
  • Community Colleges Established

    Community Colleges were established so people could get a free college education. This also was meant to help WWII vets to get an education as well. The Truman Commission Report made it possible for people other than rich white men to get an education easier. (T1)
  • Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka

    This trial ended racial segregation in public schools. This started the civil rights movement in the United States. (T1)
  • First Computer Used in School

    Computers were first used in New York. They were used to teach in elementary schools.
  • The First ACT

    Everett Franklin Lindquist put on the first ACT test. (T1)
  • Three-Dimensional Modeling Tools

    These help with math and helping students visualize. pg 192
  • GIS Invented

    On page 185, teacher Patricia Gonzalez had her students use GIS to find out where the next landfill in their state should be located.
  • Learning Disabilities Association of America

    Public education is now free for children with learning disabilities. This term was also created instead of using derogatory words. Special needs education programs were also established for children who needed extra help. (T1)
  • Title IX of the Education Amendments

    This made discrimination of sex in all aspects of education illegal. (T1)
  • First Center for Independent Living

    This center was opened for people with disabilities so they did not have to live in nursing homes. (T3)
  • Word Processors

    These tools help in documents with spell checkers and dictionaries. pg 192
  • Tribal Colleges Act

    A community college was put on every reservation. This helped people go to college easier and more accessible. (T1)
  • The Geometer's Sketchpad

    This allows students to do things with math and geometry on an online program. This helps with what teachers cannot visualize for students. pg 203
  • Virtual School

    Online high schools are required in the state of Michigan. Some other states require an online class, but others do not. pg 205
  • Excel Introduced

    Excel would be a cognitive tool because you can make graphs and sheets to help understand school concepts. pg 191
  • Handicapped Children's Protection Act

    This act made it so disabled children could have access to free public schools. (T3)
  • Powerpoint

    Powerpoint is an example of using slides to make a presentation in classes still used today by teachers and students. pg187
  • Americans with Disabilities Act

    This act made it illegal to discriminate against disabled people in the workplace and the general public. (T3)
  • IDEA

    This act included FAPE, LRE, IEP, evaluation, parent-student participation, and all procedural drills for participants. (T3)
  • Search Engines

    Search engines provide students with a variety of information for projects and research. pg192
  • Jones International University

    This is the first school to exist entirely online and for everyone. (T1)
  • Improving America's Schools Act

    Bill Clinton signed the IASA. This reformed elementary and secondary education. This helped with bilingual and immigrant educations. The IASA aided towards dropouts and technology in the classrooms. (T1)

    Edmodo is an online source to help teachers and parents stay connected with school work. pg 210
  • Common Core State Standards

    These are standards of what k-12 students have to know at the end of each school year. (T1)

    Prezi is basically an updated version of Powerpoint or Keynote. This tool allows teachers to still present topics to students, but in a different style that can be shared anywhere. pg 187

    This program was made to help high-risk students not drop out. It is based out of Los Angeles, California. pg217
  • National Education Technology Plan

    NTEP was made so that a "revolutionary transformation of education rather than evolutionary tinkering". pg 190
