  • Sons of Liberty

    At first the Sons of Liberty were known as The Loyal Nine with agitation against the Stamp Act. They grew and later became known as the Sons of Liberty. They were formed to protect the rights of colonists and take to the streets against the abuses of the British government. They're best known for undertaking the Boston Tea Party in 1773, in reaction to the Tea Act.
  • Committees of Correspondance

    The Committees of Correspondance were the American colonie's first institution for maintaining communication with one another. Together they coordinated responses to Britain and shared thier plans. It was important for the colonies to share their ideas and information. A total of about 7,000- 8,000 Patriots served on these committees
  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    The Sugar Act was passed by the Parliament of Great Britain. This reduced the rate of tax on molasses six pence per gallon. The act also required more foreign goods to be taxed including sugar, certain wines, coffee,and pimiento. It made for a decline in the rum industry. The rum industry decined because of the enforced tax on molasses.
  • Stamp Act

    The Stsmp Act's purpose was to help pay for troops stationed in North America. It required colonists to pay taxes on every printed material. These printed materials were legal documents, magazines, newspapers and many other types of paper used throughout the colonies. The stamp taxes had to be paid in valid British currency, not in colonial money.
  • Townshend Acts

    The Townshend Acts were passed by the Englsih Parliament shortly after the Stamp Act. They were passed to show colonists they had control over them. The Townshend Acts were designed to collect taxes on imports of glass, lead, paints, tea, oil, and paper.
  • Boston Massacre

    The Boston Massacre started when British troops had been stationed in Boston to protect colonial officials. One of the soldiers verbally and physically harrassed the crowd. The mob got mad & the soldier called for eight other soldiers to back him up. Without orders they fired into the crowd and killed 3 immediately, and found out later that night 2 people who had been injured died also.
  • Tea Act

    Tea Act
    The objective of the Tea Act was to reduce the massive surplus of tea held by the British East India Company. Another objective was to undercut the price of tea smuggled into Britian's North America colonies. This was supposed to convince colonists to purchase Company tea. The Act granted the Company the right to directly ship its tea to North America.
  • Boston Tea Party

    The Boston Tea Party was a political protest by the Sons of Liberty in Boston against the tax policy of the British government and East India Company that controlled all the tea imported to the colonies. One night officials in Boston refused to return three shiploads of taxed tea to Britian, and a group of colonists boarded theh ships and dumped the tea into the Boston Harbor.This was known as the Boston Tea Party.
  • Intolerable Acts

    The Intolerable Acts were a series of punitive laws passed by the British Parliament relating to Massachusetts after the Boston Tea Party. The acts took away self government and historic rights from Massachusetts.
  • First Continental Congress

    They were called in response to the passage of Coercive Acts. 56 memebers attended. These memebers were appointed by the legislatures of twelve of the thirteen colonies. They met briefly to consider options, including economic boycott.
