  • Boynton v. Virginia

    Supreme Court case Boynton v. Virginia resulted in an expansion of an earlier ban on segregation, now including bus stations and restaurants.
  • Freedom Rides

    CORE and SNCC organized the Freedom Rides to test the South’s compliance with the Supreme Court's ruling. Ultimately this led to the attacking of a bus, setting fire to it and beatings of all its passengers.
  • James Meredith

    The University of Mississippi refused to allow James Meredith to apply for the school, rejecting his application. With the help of the NAACP, the Supreme Court upheld the claims that the decision was based upon race and allowed him entry to the school. This resulted in the standoff between the Governor of Mississippi and the Justice Department. Marshalls were sent to escort James Meredith around campus by the President of the United States shortly after.
  • Civil Rights Campaign

    Martin Luther King joined Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth in a civil rights campaign in Birmingham, Alabama. When refusing to comply with the orders to end the march, King and other protesters were arrested. After being released a week later, King rejoined the protesters and faced violent wrath from officials, all being caught on camera and broadcast to the American people around the country, terrifying them.
  • The March on Washington

    The March on Washington, attended by more than 200,000 people who all came peacefully and were present for the deliverance of one of the most famous speeches in time, “I Have a Dream” presented by Martin Luther King, Jr.
  • Civil Rights Act

    The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed after President Johnson countered a filibuster and brought forth the voting on this historic act.
