New York was burning while Isabella was staying at Lady Seymours home to help with feeding the British soldiers. Then when Isabella awoke, New York was a burning inferno, so she had to help Lady Seymour. When they were escaping, Lady Seymour wanted to take her beloved chest of belongings, but they couldn't carry it together. Now Lady Seymour suffers a disease where half her body is "numb" basically.

Many Colonists were caught fighting, so the British took them and imprisoned them, including Curzon the boy with the red hat. Isabella shortly after, comes to visit him and finds that he is very sick.

Isabella starts visiting the prison often, bringing scraps for Curzon and the people in his cells. She then gets a couple of messages to send to some Patriot captains around the city from the prisoners and vice versa.

Mrs. Lockton finds out that Isabella was going down to the prisons, and sending messages around, so Mrs. Lockton got very mad. She threatened to sell her and her sister Ruth and she meant it. (Ruth was being held in Charlestown with an estate manager because Mrs. Lockton couldn't find a buyer).

Isabella is put in the Lockton's potatoe bin. She finds molded wood in the corner so that she can peel away and finally frees herself. She grabs a map and some money from Lady Seymour's bag. Then heads down to the prisons to find Curzon.

Isabella lies that she has to clean the cells in the jail, then heads to Curzon's cell and tells him to pretend to be dead. She takes him outside on a wheelbarrow to "dispose" of him. Then they head down to the wharf and steal a boat to run away.

Isabella and Curzon finally cross the river "Jordan" to freedom. They are both alive and that is the end of the book.
