  • Leeuwenhoek, Anton van

    Leeuwenhoek, Anton van
-Anton was the first person to observe living cells.
-He made microscopes that had more precise magnification on the lenses than microscopes made by Robert Hooke.
    -He called today's protists, animalcules.
-Anton was able to observe microorganisms.
  • Hooke, Robert

    Hooke, Robert
-Robert was the first one to observe cork cells with an early microscope.
-He was a member of the Royal Society.
    -He studied at Wadham College.
-He investigated refraction, was the first to suggest that matter expands when heated, and suggested that air is made of small particles separated by relatively large distances.
  • Needham, John

    Needham, John
-John was also a Roman Catholic priest.
-In 1768, he became part of the Royal Soceity.
-He preformed experiments with gravy and tainted wheat in containers.
His experiments showed that there was a life force that made spontaneous generation.

-He studied plant structure under the microscope.
-Matthias made the first statement of the cell theory.
-He recognized the importance of the nucleus.
  • Schwann, Theodor

    Schwann, Theodor
-Theodor concluded that all animals are made up of cells.
    -He invented the term, metabolism.
-Schwann has a statement in the cell theory.
-Theodor observed that the ovum is a single cell that eventually develops into a complete organism.
  • Virchow, Rudolph

    Virchow, Rudolph
-Rudolph stated all cells come from other living cells.
-He is also know as the "father of modern pathology".
-Rudolph is considered one of the founders of social medicine.
-He is the first sited to recognize leukemia cells.
