Cell Theory

  • Robert Hooke

    Robert Hooke
Robert Hooke saw the cell wall in a cork slice using a primitive compound microscope. He published Micrographia which is a book with all his findings and drawings. Even though he was looking at dead tissue, he contributed the word cell to the cell theory. he thought of the cells of a monastery when he saw the structure so that is the word he used.
  • Antony von leewenhoek

    Antony von leewenhoek
He was the first person to observe living organisms. In order to make the discovery of living organisms he uses pond water and a single-celled microscope. He contributed protists and Eukaryotic cells. Also discovered blood cells and sperm cells. His model disproves the previous one by saying that cells are actually living organisms.
  • Robert Brown

    Robert Brown
Discovered that plant cells have a nucleus. His model disproved the previous one by stating that cells have something other then a cell wall.
  • Mathias schleiden

    Mathias schleiden
He concluded that all plant cells were made of cells. He stated that all plant tissues are made up of cells and that an embryonic plant comes from a single cell.
  • Theodor Schwann

    Theodor Schwann
Discovered that all animals are comprised of cells. He also described cellular structures in animal cartilage. He declared that cells were the basic building blocks of life. His model proved that not only plants were made of cells but that all things were made of cells.
  • Rudolf Virchow

    Rudolf Virchow
He concluded that new cells can only be produced from the division of already existing cells. This process is called mitosis. His model disproved that previous one by explaining that the cell theory not only applies to healthy tissue but it also applies to diseased tissue which comes from healthy tissue.
