Cell Theory

  • Hooke

    Hooke
-First person to discovery the cell
-Hook was observing a thin cork slice and notice the many pores it contained and called the pores cells
-Spontaneous generation was widely excepted at the time. Although Hooke didn’t directly relate the cells to the making up of living material. He opened up the idea idea of all things being made of smaller material that isn’t noticeable to the naked eye
  • Leewenhoek

    Leewenhoek
-Created microscopes that had up to a 270x magnification by grinding lenses together
    - being inspired after reading copy of Robert Hooke's book Micrographia, Leeuwenhoek began to create his own microscopes and began to study the world around him under the Royal Society of London
-he was the first to discovery single celled organisms, microorganisms, and observe bacteria and blood flow in caterpillars
  • Brown

    Brown
-discovered the nucleus in plant cells
-observed that small particles ejected from pollen continuously moved. He observed the same thing happening to inorganic matter
noticed pollen traveling in and out of ovals in plant cells. He called this oval the nucleus
.-He suggested the nucleus played a key role in fertilization and development of the embryo in plants. He created the possibility that the nucleus was the the center of cellular creation
  • Schwann

    Schwann
-Proposed an actual theory behind cells and how they relate to living matter
he traced the development of many adult tissues from early embryo stages to prove his theory
-concluded cells are organisms and all organisms consist of one or more cells. The cell is the basic unit of structure for all organisms.
Not only plants, but animal tissue are also composed of cells.
  • Schleiden

    Schleiden
-First to make a generalization of cells and their relationship to living material
-Studied the structure of plants using a microscope .He also recognized the importance of the cell nucleus and its connection to cell division.
-concluded that all plant tissues are composed of cells and that an embryonic plant arose from a single cell. He stated that the cell is the basic building block of all plant matter
  • Virchow

    Virchow
-Rudolph Virchow suggested that all cells come from pre-existing cells.
-Virchow had disproved a prominent view that inflammation of a vein causes most diseases. He demonstrated that masses in the blood vessels resulted from clotting and that portions of a clots could become detached to form an embolus. An embolus set free in the circulation might get trapped in a narrower vessel and lead to lesions in the neighboring parts.
