Cell Theory and Discovery of the Microscope Timeline

  • Hans and Zacharias Jansen

Hans and Zach Jansen were the fitst to make a compound microscope in the 1590's. Thye had a lot of lenses in a tube which enabled them to zoom in on thier specimen. Thanks to them scientists were able to discover cells and tiny organisms.

    Cell Theory

  • Jean Baptise van Helmont

In 1643 Jean Baptisete created an experiment that said that a willow tree did not get its health from the water or soil. The spontaneous generation was rejected because it said that the tree did not come from the soild but from the nutrience of the water.
  • Robert Hooke

In 1665 Robert Hooke came up with the name cell. He came up with the name by putting a sliver of cork under a microscope and naming the things that he saw under it. He said the cells serves as containers for juices.
  • Francesco Redi

In 1688 Francesco Redi aproved that maggots did not come from meat. He lined up 8 jars and put meat in them. He covered four of them with muslin and the others without it had maggots in it. This disproves spontaneous generation because it says that maggots dont come from meat.
  • Anton van Leeuwenhoek

In 1674 Anton he looked under a microscope and observed the bloodflow of some organisms. He was also the person to discover single cell organisms or also called animalcules
  • Lazzaro Spallanzani

IN 1765 he proved the vital atoms theory. That stated that all organisms had vital atoms the regained from plants. That statement was wrong. This disproves spontanious generation beacause it shows that animals regenerate themselves. One of these atoms does not do it for it.
  • Rene Dutrochet

In 1776 Rene Dutrochet was the first to to investigate thouroghly the mechanisms of respiration, light sensitivity and geoptrism of plants. He aslo constructed a osmometer. He aslo discovered the importance of individual cells. This disproves spontaneous generation because it showed that plants take in carbon dioxide to grow and that they do not come from soil.
  • Theodor Schwann

In 1839 Schwann found out that the only thing animas are made of is from other cells. This disproves spontanious generation because animals are made of other cells and cells are in every organism.
  • Rudolf Virchow

In 1855 said that every cell stems from another cells. When he said that it was also known as the biogenic law.,
  • Louis Pasteur

In 1862 Louis Pasteur that if you boiled and also cooled a liquid that the bacteria would be removed. He did an experiment where he put soup in two different flasks. One of them was straight and the other one was curved. The straight one had the bacteria and the curved one didnt. This rejected spontanious generation becasuse is says that bacteria needs a place to settle and not just coming from soup.
  • Enst Ruska

In 1931 when Ernst was at the university of Berlin he built the first transmission eletro microscope. He has also built an EM with a lot more resolution of a light microscope.
  • Matthias Schleiden

In 1938 Matthias said that a cell is the basic building block of an organism. He found out that all cells come from pre existing cells. He proved this statement about plants and animals and about thier true cells .
