  • 111

None of these days or months are exact

  • Microscope invented

    Microscope invented
Hans and Zacharias Janssen are the likely inventors of the tool that opened up a whole new world of science. The microscope allowed scientists to view things on a small scale. The actual day is unknown.
  • Discovery of cells

    Discovery of cells
Robert Hooke discovered the cell in a section of cork finding cell walls with his microscope. The day and month are unknown.
  • Single cell organisms observed

    Single cell organisms observed
Leeuwenhoek first observed single cell organisms and called them little animicules. He published his findings in 1676. He was most likely the first one to see a sperm and a red blood cell.
  • Nucleus is named

    Nucleus is named
In 1831 Robert Brown was investigating the reproductive mechanisms of plants when he noticed the existence of a structure in the cell that was in many other plant cells that he named the nucleus. While he was not the first one to see the nucleus his name for it was the one that became official. The experiment was done in 1831.
  • Cell Theory begun

    Cell Theory begun
Theodor Schwann and Matthias Schliedan begin Cell Theory by stating that all living things are made up of cells. Month and day are unknown.
  • Animal cells come from other animal cells

Animal cells come from other animal cells
In 1852 Robert Remak published that binary fission was the means of reproducing for animal cells. Exact date is unknown.
  • Binary fission accepted

    Binary fission accepted
In 1854 Rudolf Virchow wrote an essay in which he said, "Every cell arises from another cell."
  • Cell Theory modified

    Cell Theory modified
Alexander Carl Heinrich Braun changes the cell theory slightly by calling cells the basic unit of life.
  • 3rd part of cell theory added

3rd part of cell theory added
Rudolf Virchow strikes again when he adds that all cells develop from pre-existing cells into the cell theory. He was the first one to propose that diseased cells can come from healthy cells.
  • Question 1

    Question 1
What theory did these scientists provide evidence for? Cell Theory
  • Question 2

    Question 2
What instrument was necessary before the cell theory could be developed? The microscope
  • Question 3

    Question 3
Which three scientists directly contributed evidence for the cell theory? Theodor Schwann, Matthias Schleiden and Rudolf Virchow
  • Question 4

    Question 4
How did earlier scientists and their contributions directly affect the discoveries of later scientists? The microscope allowed cells to be discovered which started the whole cell thing.
  • Question 5

    Question 5
List the three parts of the cell theory.
    1. All living things are composed of cells
    2. Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in living things
    3. All cells are produced from other cells
