Cell Theory

  • Hooke's Cell Theory Contribution

Hooke discovered the plant cell and cell wall, and the first to use the word cell. He made this discovery by looking at the cork of a bottle. He published his discoveries in the book Micrographia. He disproved that living organisms didn't spring up from inanimate matter. These discoveries led to the development of the Cell Theory.

  • Leeuwenhoek's Cell Theory Contribution

Leeuwenhoek was the first to observe single celled organisms such as bacteria. He made these discoveries by experimenting with his handmade microscopes. He collaborated with Hooke to make some of his discoveries His discoveries led to Schwann's, Brown, Schleiden, and Virchow's discoveries. He also disproved spontaneous generation.

  • Brown's Cell Theory Contribution

Brown discovered the cell nucleus of plant cells. This discovery later helped Virchow make his discoveries. He made his discovery by scrutinizing orchids with his microscope. he disproved that the nucleus wasn't important to the cell.

  • Schwann's Cell Theory Contributions

Schwann discovered that animals are also made up of cells. He disproved that only plants were made up of cells, He made this discovery by using a better microscope than the Hooke and Leeuwenhoek.

  • Schleiden Cell Theory Contribution

Schleiden added to the theory that all living organisms are made up of one or more cells. He discovered that all parts of plants are made of cells. Made his discovery by looking at plant tissue under a microscope. He worked with Brown to make his discovery.

  • Virchow's Cell Theory Contribution

Virchow added the idea that a cells came from other cells. This disproved that cells did not come from dead material. This idea caused other scientists to prove his theory.
