First compound microscope invented. There is a lot of speculation as to the exact date of the invention. Some say 1590 while others say 1565. No spacific date is associated with the invention.
  • Robert Hooke

    Robert Hooke
Robert Hooke was the first person to coin the term "cell" while looking at a piece of cork under a microscope.
  • Antonie van Leeuwenhoek

This is the year the van Leeuwenhoek imrpoved the compound microscope.
  • Antonie van Leeuwenhoek

    Antonie van Leeuwenhoek
Antonie van Leeuwenhoek was the first person to discover single-cell theory. Many scientists at the time did not believe him since there was not enough evidence.
  • Theodor Schwann & Matthias Schleiden

    Theodor Schwann & Matthias Schleiden
The two of them together came up with what we call cell theory. Mathias first discovered that all plants are composed of cells and then told Theodor of his discoveries. Theodor had noticed similar cells in notochords. They concluded that cells were the basic unit of life. Could not think of a logical way of how the new cells were created until Virchow identified it.
  • Rudolf Virchow

    Rudolf Virchow
Virchow elaborated on the ideas of Schwann and Schleiden and went into more detail about cell theory. He contributed the idea that every living cell comes from another living cell (a major principle in cell thory). It is thought that Virchow stole the idea from Robert Remak.
