Dred Scott’s owner moved to a free state, but Dred was still a slave. He took it to court and the judge ruled that african americans were possessions, and not citizens. Therefore, no state was a free state.

The Lincoln-Douglas Debates were a series of seven debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas. Lasted between August 21st, 1858 to October 15th, 1858.

John Brown once attempted to rebel against slavery. He and his army snuck into Harper's Ferry on October 16th, 1859. Half of his men and two of his sons were killed and John Brown was wounded and captured. He was sentenced to death on December 2nd, 1859.

The election of 1860 was one of the main causes of the civil war. Lincoln became president with only 40% of the popular vote. Later several states seceded from the union.

The Southern Secession was also known as the outbreak of the Civil War. Southern states began to leave the nation.
