Causes of the American Revolution

  • Albany Plan of Union

    Albany Plan of Union
    Plan drafted by Benjamin Franklin that called upon the colonies to unite under British rule and work together during war. This failed because the colonies feared losing their independence.
  • End of the French and Indian War

    End of the French and Indian War
    Treaty of Paris was signed by both the French and British. Britain took all of thier land in the Americas. Although they were given this land, many war debts needed to be paid. France lost all claims to Canada and gave Lousiana to Spain, while Britian recieved Spanish Florida, Upper Canada, and various French holdings overseas. The 13 colonies were strenghthened by removing their European rivals. French biterness of the loss contributed to the American Revolution.

    This was an uprising of Native tribes near the Ohio River Valley lead by the Ottawan leader Pontiac. Thier goal was to weaken the British and lure the French back into North America. This enforced the Proclamation of 1763.

    The British seeked to a quick end to an expensive war. The Colonists were forced to stay east of the appalachians. They were greatly angered by this because they just fought war for this land. British taxed the colonists to pay for war damages. The Proclamation established new colonies. Most of the Proclamation is devoted to the subject of the Indians.

    The Townshend Acts were imposed by Parliament on the Thirteen Colonies in 1767. Their purpose was to increase revenue in the colonies to pay for the salaries of judges and other officials just so they could stay loyal to Britain. These acts resulted in the Boston Massacre.

    The Boston Massacre is a major event in history. This is where British soldiers killed five male civilians and wounded six others on King Street in Boston. This sparked patriotism in the colonies and led to many proaganda wars.

    Parliament passes the Tea Act which had the British East India company sell tons of tea to the colonies at a bargain price. Due to the radical governors in America the ships were turned around and sent back to Brtiain. This helped spark the relvolutionary efforts.

    Lexington and Concord in Middlesex county is where the first shots were fired between the U.S. Colonies and the British. This began a crucial battle in American history known as the Revolutionary War. This led to the U.S. gaining its independence.
