    Harriet was a vigilante that helped slaves escape through an underground connection known as the Underground Railroad. Maryland-born, she even helped guide her family to freedom. She was loved by many for her bravery and compassion.

    The 19th quadrennial presidential election was held in the U.S. on this day. Through this Abraham Lincoln was successfully elected president. It was also later through him that the Civil War would erupt.
