    Newsprint
    Newsprint was invented by Charles Fenerty. The first form of paper was papyrus which was made of the papyrus plant and then came paper. Newsprint is a type of paper made from wood pulp. Charles Fenerty created newsprint when he was working at a local paper mill helping with the supply of rags to make paper when he succeeded in making a type of paper from wood pulp. Although he chose to not patent the newsprint and then others did patent paper with wood fiber.
  • Odometer

    The odometer was invented by Samuel McKeen. The odometer measures the distance that a vehicle travels and it has changed the way of driving since 1854. Samuel McKeen created an early version of the odometer where he attached it to the side of the carriage and measured the miles with the turning of the wheels.The odometer is a very important invention because we still use it daily today without it you could not tell how far your vehicle travels.

    Air Conditioned Railroad Coach
    The air conditioned railroad coach was invented in 1858 by Henry Ruttan. He designed air heaters and ventalation systems by drawing in air through a duct. If the air was to be heated it would circulate through a heater and then flow through the coach and go out through a duct which would send it outside. If the air was to be cooled the air would be sent through a wash tank where the air was cleaned humidified and cooled then sent through the coach.

    Green Ink was invented by Thomas Sterry Hunt. Thomas Sterry Hunt was a professor at a university for chemistry and mineralogy although after years of teaching he got bored and decided to devote his energy to scientific research. Thomas Sterry Hunt created and perfected green ink using gas water oil and various minerals.

    The Rotary Railroad Snowplow was invented by J.E Elliott. The snowplow has a circular set of blades on the front and they rotate to cut through the snow and et it off the track. The rotary railroad snowplow was actually invented right here in Toronto. The plow does not move itself it needs pairs of people to push the plow along the railroad. The plow can be changed to chute the snow to the left or the right side of the tracks.

    The electric lightbulb was invented by Henry Woodward. Henry Woodward sold the patent to Thomas Edison who later designed his own version of the lightbulb. Henry Woodward's original lightbulb was a glass tube with two wires connected to a piece of carbon filled with nitrogen so that the lightbulb would burn longer. Althought Henry sold the patent to Thomas Edison allowing Edison to create an improved version of Henry Woodward's invention.

    The telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell and has made a very large impact on our lives today. Alexander Graham Bell and Elisha Grey were both trying to make a telephone at the same time but Alexander Graham Bell patented his telephone first. The invention of the telephone was an improved version of the telegraph they both were wire based electrical systems but the telephone was more practical.

    The electric street car was invented by John Joseph Wright. When John Joseph Wright invented the street car he was working for Charles Joseph Van Depole even though the newspapers didn't mention John Joseph Wrights involvement in making the streetcar.

    The gramophone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell and Emile Berliner. Before Bell and Berliner Thomas Edison tried to create a music playing device which he called a phonograph although it had poor sound quality and the track could only play once. Then Alexander Graham Bell and Emilie Berliner made a Gramophone which had wax cylinders and could be played many times.

    The Brunton compass was invented by David W. Brunton. This compass is a type of precision compass it is used for people who need an accurate degree and angle measurement. The compass works by the user holds the compass looks down at the mirror then the needle,target and guide line line up and that is when the compass is ready to work. This compass was a very important invention for various reasons without it we would not have any very accurate compasses.
