This meant that states offering law schools and medical schools for whites had to provide such institutions for African Americans as well. May 7, 1946 Heman Sweatt applied to the law school at University of Texas Rather than admitting sweat the unviersity created a seperate African American law school. Jul 1, 1946 Civil rights activists protest outside whithouse Dec 1, 1946 President Truman responded to the pressure of protesters Presidet truman creaed the committee on civil rights to study racial discrimination and suggest federal solutions to the problem, Jul 7, 1948 Truman ended segregation in the military. That year he aso banned racial discrimination in the hiring of federal employees. May 7, 1950 The supreme court rules in Sweatt v Painter The african american school did not provide an equal oppurtunity, the school was forced to admit Sweat to the University. May 7, 1954 Supreme Court rules that segregation in schools is illegal. May 7, 1954 Only 3 school districts in the south agree to desegregate. May 7, 1955 Supreme Court overturns Plessy v Ferguson The court made it so that all schools had to desegregate with "all deliberate speed". Dec 1, 1955 Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white passenger. She was quickly arrested, her case was used to challenge the bus segregation law. Nov 7, 1956 Supreme Court rules that Montgomery's segregated bus system was illegal. May 7, 1957 The "Little Rock Nine" attend Central high school. A group of nine outstanding african american students being to attend a white school to begin desegregation. May 7, 1958 Ernest Green is first african american student to graduate Central High School.
