Brayden Heath - The evolution of the light

  • Early Light Bulbs

    Early Light Bulbs

Humphry Davy invented the first electric light. He experimented with different things and then tried electricity and discovered an electric battery. He invented the "Electric Arc Lamp."
  • Warren de la Rue

    Warren de la Rue

A British scientist named Warren de la Rue wrapped a coiled platinum filament in a vacuum tube and passed an electrical current through it. It was based on a concept of a high melting point but, it could not be commercially produced because of the cost.

    Joseph Wilson Swan

An English physicist named Joseph Wilson Swan made a lightbulb by putting carbonized paper filaments in an empty glass bottle. In 1860 it lacked a good vacuum and a good supply of electricity which made the bulbs lifetime small. In 1878 Swan made a bulb that could last longer made out of treated cotton thread.
  • Henry Wooward and Mathew Evans

    Henry Wooward and Mathew Evans

Henry and Mathey made lamps of different sizes and shapes of carbon rods held between electrodes in a glass cylinder. They tried to commercialize the lamp but, they were not able to. They sold their patent to Edison in 1879
  • Period: to

    Thomas Edison

Thomas began research for developing a new light that can last much longer than the others. He kept testing several types of materials for the filament to improve in his original design. On Nov 4, 1879, he filed another U.S. patent for an electric lamp, and after that Edison and his team discovered that a carbonized bamboo filament could last over 1200 hours.
