  • Brown vs. Board of Education Decision

    The Supreme Court ruled that all schools are by nature unequal. All schools were ordered to be desegregated.
  • Rosa Parks: Montgomery Bus Boycott

    On this date, Rosa Parks - a black seamstress - refused to give up her seat on the bus for a white man. This sparked bus boycotts across the city, and with much of the system's income gone, the boycotts ultimately worked. Public transportation laws regarding racial seating was changed for the better.
  • March on Washington: "I Have a Dream" Speech

    Over a fourth of a million supporters of equal rights gathered at the Lincoln Memorial to listen to speeches about their cause. Among those speeches was the famous "I Have a Dream" speech by Martin Luther King Jr. It remains as one of his greatest legacies.
  • Bombing of Birmingham Church

    A bomb was planted in the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama by KKK clan members. Targeting civil rights leaders, the resulting blast injured many and killed 4 innocent black girls.
  • Civil Rights Act is Passed

    This act outlawed discrimination based on race, sex, religion, etc. and was the result of the Civil Rights Movement. It overcame Senate filibuster and granted African Americans the rights they had fought for.
