During the 1950s, a movement took form. The American Civil Rights Movement. They worked to gain equal rights for black and white, and to see an end to segregation. Most of the activists were convinced that peaceful protests and non-violence was the way to go. They were led by Martin Luther King Jr. who is perhaps most famous for the speech where he said: "I have a dream".

Changes were made with the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that banned discrimination, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that restored the right to vote to minorities, and the Fair Housing Act of 1968 that banned discrimination in the sale and rental of housing.
