My first proposal was rather general, focusing on comparing development of writing in two disciplines.

Presentation to Archaeology masters students, outlining research and inviting participants to take part.

Baseline interviews carried out with three student participants and three tutors in Archaeology.

Three student participants were interviewed to discuss their first feedback on formative assignments.

After a short presentation on language support options for MA TESOL students, I introduced my study and invited participants to contact me by e-mail if they wished to take part in the research.

Weeks two and three of term, baseline interviews carried out with 8 student participants.

Tutors were interviewed to discuss the feedback they had written on the 8 students in the study; interviews with each student took place within a few days of these.

This was an important meeting with my supervisor and internal examiner, which discussed the way in which the study design had moved from first to second phase. I detailed decisions that led to a more refined set of research questions and a more aligned procedure linking tutor feedback with student responses.

Week 7 of term, tutor interviews carried out to discuss first formative feedback, followed by student interviews within one week of their receiving feedback.

This was the first submission of substantive work on the early chapters. I offically received notification of upgrade to the doctorate and received constructive feedback on how to rewrite and develop my design chapter.

Phase 2 analysis of cases and themes

Final analysis of Phase 2, 6 case studies discussed. Thematic approach to chapter agreed.

The final chapters and appendices were created at this point.
