  • Siraj ud-Daulah's Orders

    Siraj ud-Daulah orders the British to stop fortifying Fort William in Calcutta, but they do so anyway.
  • Black Hole of Calcutta

    Since the British disobeyed Siraj ud-Daulah, he sends his army to capture Fort William in Calcutta. This resulted in the imprisonment of 146 people stationed at the fort. 123 of them died. See the "Causes" page for more information.
  • The British Retake Calcutta

    The British, led by Robert Clive, retake Calcutta and push slightly past it to win another battle in Hooghly, 37 km north of Calcutta.
  • Treaty of Alinagar

    The Nawab, Siraj ud-Daulah, is frightened by the British victory at Calcutta and Hooghly and signs the Treaty of Alinagar. Under this treaty, the Nawab agreed to restore the East India Company's factories and not hinder it from fortifying Calcutta. The British are also exempt from taxes on their goods that pass through Bengal and are allowed to mint coins in Calcutta.
