atomic theory Tyler Duffin

  • the law of conservation of mass

the law of conservation of mass states that matter can neither be created nor destroyed
  • the law of definite composition

the law of definite composition states: no matter how much a pure compound will always contain the same elements and same proportions by mass.
  • dalton's atomic theory

his theory stated that all matter is made of atoms that are indestructable and invisible, all atoms of an elemant are identical, compounds are made at least 2 different atoms, and a chemical reaction is a rearrangement of atoms
  • the law of multiple proportions

the law of multiple proportions states that: when an element combines with another element to make more than one compound the mass rations of the elements in the compounds are whole numbers.
  • plank's quantum theory

this is the model that we currently use to show the atom his model is a seiries of shapes in which the electrons are located. his model also has the nucleus like the bohr model btu the bohr has the electrons orbiting in a fixed place much like the planets
  • who discovered the electron

jj thomson was credited with the discovery of the electron
  • rutherfords plum cake

to hit gold leaf with alpha particals from 214Po and he noticed that some of the atoms went in different directions then the others form this he gathered more information about the structure of the gold leaf.
  • Millikan's experiment/ central neucles model

this experiment was part of the discovery of the electron and its part in the mass of the atom this lead to the central neucules model.
  • JJ Thomson and the plum pudding/raisin bread model

in 1911 Thomson discovered the plum pudding model of an atom suggesting that the protons and electrons were mixed in the atom with no neucules
  • Bohr's Model

Bohr's model improved rutherfords model by one haveing the nucleus and the electrons in a stationary form.
  • heisenberg' uncertanty principle

he found that velocity times mass is equal to the uncertanty of an atom.
  • schrodinger equation

he created an equation to predict the properties and reactivities of all atoms and molecules
  • Quantum mechanical model

this model incorperates electron configuration and it creates a way to show and orginize elements with atomic numbers that are in the 70's and 80's this made it much easier than the other mashed up models
  • Louis de Brogile

he developed the quantum theory and this relates the atomic theory because it was an advancement to understanding the new model better.
  • Chadwick nobel prize

Chadwick got the nobel prize because he discovered the neutron.

  • B.C. Ancient Greeks

Matter is just what things are made of not what shape they are in for example a rock if you break that rock it is still a rock it has just changed its shape and size. democritus proposed that matter is mde up of tiny indestructable units called atoms.
