  • Period: Jan 1, 1500 to Jan 1, 1564

    Native Americans

    The Native American time period was a time before the purtans. The exact time that this period began is not certain, but the end date is. Native Americans lived in groups or tribes, such as the Cherokees. Literature wasn't published during this time period, so stories had to be told orally rather than being written like the time periods afterward would do.

    Puritan

    Puritans, or protestants, are extremists who believe that preachings must be based on the bible, and oppose many "fun" things in general. During this time period, books were written mainly to show the idea that everyone should follow the same set of rules, and worship the same god and religion. Ideas like sin, God's Grace, and predestination were all things focused upon in these books, which try to persuade the readers that religion is the only way to go.

    5. George Herbert's The Temple The Geneva Bible is a religious book that translated the bible into English. Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity states the rules that men must follow; church is corrupt. The Declaration of Sports was a listing of sports and recreations that were allowed on sundays. The book of Common prayer is a prayer book used by anglicans. The Temple is a series of poems.

    Enlightenment

    The enlightenment is a time period that followed up the Puritain time period. It focused on science, natural law, and reasoning, rather than just religion. Deism became a new philosophy that stated that god had created the Universe, and later left it alone. Because of this, belief in science began to spread, as discoveries were being made. Human nature was studied, and given the idea that evil was simply the wrongdoings of a human. People were incouraged to think rationally, and reasonably.

    Emile was a book that inspired national education. Gullivers travels was written as a parody to all travellers tales, and to a joke to human nature in general. Age of Louis was a narration of the time period of Louis XIV. A letter concerning toleration is written in fear that Catholics would take over England. Julie, or the New Heloise was an Epistolary, about Heloise.

    Gothic Fiction

    Gothic Fiction is a time period in which literature was written in a way that romance, and horror are combined. Authors such as Mary Shelley wrote things like Frankenstein, where monsters were often the antagonists. Atmosphere, and heavy suspense is often used, as well as the main topics usually involving something supernatural.

    Castle of Otranto is thought to be the very first written gothic novel. Frankenstein was a story about a man who creates an evil monster. Dracula is a story about a vampire, who is trying to get to England. Wuthering Height is a love story about Catherine Earnshaw. Jane Eyre is about a woman, going deep into the main characters mind and feelings.

    Transcendentalism

    Transcendentalism developed mainly because of the enlightenment period. It was a philosophical movent that focused on the idea that people and nature should be good. It believed that religion, political parties, and other organizations were the reason for corruption in society. Transcendentalists tried to persuade people that they should be self-reliant, and stay individual. This time period was the complete opposite of that of the Puritan time, as they wanted people to stay independant.

    Nature was written to set the foundation of transcendentalism. The American Scholar is a speech that Ralph Emerson read, about Nature. Divinity School Address is another speech by Ralph, that was given to the graduating class of Harvard. The dial is a book about transcendentalism as a whole, that turned into a magazine.

    Romanticism

    Romanticism was a literary, and intellectual movement, that mainly focused upon the arts. These arts range from music, to literature, to visual arts. It transformed arts like sculpting and poetry into deeper, more relatable forms. It also revolted against political norms, and greatly increaed the idea of nationalism significantly.

    Realism

    The Realism time period was a time where subject matter would be told in truthful ways, rather than unrealisitic, supernatural, or artificial ways. Realism was an attempt to change the way that stories were told in the way that literature is written in the opposite ways of romanticism, and other fictional writtings. Much rather, they write realistic, and non exotic stories.

    The scarlet letter is a romantic fiction, focusing on sin, and guilt. Twice Told Tales is a collection of novels by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The Masque of the Red Death is a book about the Black plague. The Gold-Bug is about a man who was bitten by a bug, and goes crazy. The purloined letter is a story about detectives, searching for a murderer.

    Naturalism

    The Naturalism time period focused heavily upon the idea that social conditions, and the environment completely shaped the way a human's characteristics are. The literature was written in ways that are believable, and seem realistic. Another idea that is brought forward because of naturalism is the idea that you cannot escape the forces of the environment, and social conditions, as it will change human character no matter what.

    Regionalism

    The Regionalism time period was a movement in which artists shunned the idea of city life, and many technological advances had occured. Rural life was rather preferred, and was rather focused upon. Regionalism was in a way, a bridge between abstract, and realism art styles.

    The adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a story that focuses upon Huckleberry's life. The Awakening is a novel that explains the time period of witch hunting, where people were killed for no good reason. Daisy Miller is a story about a girl who is hampered by her flirtatious attitude. The Prince and the Pauper is a story about 2 boys who look alike.

    Experimental novel is a book of innovation, and fiction. The house of mirth is a book about a woman debating whether or not it is worth it to love someone over a luxurious life. The grapes of wrath is a novel about poor farmers that are forced out of their homelands, in need of money. Lie down in darkness is a story about a family who is dysfunctional.

    Middle March is a novel about the status of women, and marriage. The Rise of Silas Lapham is a story about a man who starts out poor, and becomes rich. The Open Boat is a story about a man who survives a shipwreck. Maggie: A Girl of the Streets is a story about a girl who is driven downward by poverty. The Mill on the Floss is about the lives of Tom and Maggie, growing up.

    Imagism

    The Imagism time period was a period in which imagery, and clear precise language was favored and used. It heavily influenced change in poetry over all else. It rejected many of the ideas that were highlighted by both the Romantic, and Victorian eras of poetry. Imagism held the idea that poetry should stay precise and on topic rather than changing subjects over a period of time.

    Ripostes is a collection of poems that were created by Ezra Pound. Hugh Selwyn Mauberley is a poem by Pound as well that was the turning point of his career. The Cantos is a poem that is regarded as one of the most important pieces of the time period. Des imagists is an anthology describing the Imagism time period. The Egoist is a novel showing what Sir Patterne went through in attempt to marry.

    The Modern Age movement mainly focused upon movements in culture, and art. It was shaped by World War I that horrifically influenced the Modern Age ideas. Old ideas were being renewed in this age with refreshingly new thoughts and ideas. Things like Abstract art, pop art, and other styles were used during this time period. Because of these new ideas in art, large quantities of new artists were made famous because of their artwork.

    The Harlem Renaissance time period was known as "New Negro Movement," because it centered around black culture. Many movements were done to earn blacks civil rights. Literature was written to enlighten other upon the heritage of african americans. These efforts showed Americans just how unique and different they originally were.

    Finegans wake is an experimental style book that was one of the most complex fiction books to be released by this time period. The sleepwalkers tells tales of cosmology, and astronomy from the beginning of the study. The Sound and the Fury uses a new technique in writing during the time period called "Stream of Consciousness."

    God Sends Sunday is a book written by a great african american writer during the Harlem Renaissance era. Not without laughter is a novel that describes how life was for blacks in the 1910s. The Conjure Man Dies is a mystery story that seeks out the murderer. The Blacker the Berry is a book that described racism, and discrimination, which was quite suprising during this timeperiod.

    The contemporary period is books that were written between around 1950 to our present time period. Many different genres are counted into this time period, ranging from New wave fiction, to cyberpunk. Books that are considered being into the time period of contemporary generally were written and published after WW2.
