  • First Anime Released

    The first anime was released on January 1, 1917. The anime called, "Nakamura Gatana."
  • Great Kanto Earthquake

    The Great Kanto Earthquake hindered the development of anime, causing great damage to the whole city. As a result, the foundation of anime had to be rebuilt.

    30's & 40's

    Many rough patches occurred regarding anime during this period. However, animation became more prevalent in Japan.
  • World War Two

    Near the end of World War Two, animation became more prevalent in Japan as government attempted to produce many modes of propaganda.
  • First Full Anime Film: Momotaro: Umi no Shinpei

    In 1945, the first full anime was released tilted, "Momotaro: Umi no Shinpei." The director, Mitsuyo Seo, created this film to publicize ideas regarding World War Two. This was instructed by the Japanese government as a way to promote propaganda about the war.

    This period helped build the foundation of the anime we know now.
  • Hakujaden

    Hakujaden
    Hakujaden was released in 1958 and it is considered to be the first anime to be produced with coloured animation. This was considered to be a huge milestone in the history of anime.

    First Anime released outside of Japan
    Astroboy is the first anime to be English dubbed with the intention to release globally. Astroboy is made by Osamu Tetsuya, who is considered to be the "godfather" of anime.

    Adding onto the previous two decades, these following two decades proved to be a huge success for the production and exposure in the anime industry.
  • Sports Anime - Subgenre

    Sports Anime became a huge subgenre in anime in the 80's. Moreover, it helped expose anime to the Western world.
  • Studio Ghibli was founded

    Studio Ghibli was founded
    The famous Studio Ghibli was founded in 1985. This studio has played an immense role in producing many animes in the 80's onwards. Animes such as The Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away have been produced by Studio Ghibli.
  • Dragon Ball

    Dragon Ball
    Hailed as one of the best anime ever, Dragon Ball produced an iconic first episode on April 26, 1989. Dragon Ball created many memorable moments especially from the iconic protagonist, Goku.
  • 90's Anime

    Iconic animes like Sailor Moon, Slam Dunk, and Dragon Ball left an imprint on the Western world. These animes helped grow subgenres in anime as well as display creativity within these shows.

    90's & 00's

    These two decades proved to be a huge breakthrough in terms of global publicity. In these decades, anime reached its peak whilst being fully exposed to the Western world.
  • Big Three

    The so called "Big Three" was released during these times. Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece. These three animes put a huge stamp on the Western world with them being aired weekly on the biggest TV channels.
  • HD

    The resolution and quality of anime went to another level in the early 2010's as anime studios were consistently able to produce the highest quality episodes for viewers to watch.

    2010's & 2020"s

    These periods have fully established anime in the mainstream media throughout the whole world. Anime has gone to the next level with unique art styles and plots.
  • COVID-19

    Covid-19 was devastating to many studios and animes as they could not continue consistent production. In addition, many animes were forced to outsource to low quality studios as a way to keep viewers content.
