  • Jamestown VA founded

    Jamestown VA founded
    History of Jamestown~Jamestown had a House of Burgesses established in 1619 that ruled the colony. This was the first legislative assembly in the American colonies.
    ~The settlers in Jamestown were initially met with suspicion and fear from the Powhatan Confederacy.Frequent battles between the settlers and the Native Americans occurred. However, these same Indians would provide them with the aid they needed to get through the winter of 1607.

    ~The Proclamation made it illegal for colonists to settle west of the Appalachian Mountains and illegal to move into Ohio or Tennessee or Florida.

    Boston Massacre~In 1766, Parliament passed a new decree that reaffirmed their right to pass laws regarding the colonies. The next year they passed a number of new taxes, including a tax on glass, lead, paper, and tea.
    ~The colonies were again outraged, and many refused to pay them. In order to enforce these new tax laws, British officials requested military troops to aid them.These military troops outraged the colonists. In the winter of 1770, a small group of colonists in Boston were killed for retaliation.

    Tea Party~The price of tea in the Americas increased. In order to insure that British companies would not be hurt by this new tax, Parliament passed a law that exempted British companies from having to pay the tax. This meant that these companies could sell their tea cheaper.
    ~In protest a group of individuals dressed up as Native Americans boarded a cargo ship in Boston Harbor, and dumped its entire load of tea into the harbor waters.

    Intolerable Acts~The Intolerable Acts are series of laws sponsored by British Prime Minister Lord North and enacted in 1774 in response to the Boston Tea Party.
    ~These Acts were the harshest so far of all the Acts passed by Parliament becasue the Boston Tea Party was more upseting to Britain than the previous events.
    ~Impartial Administration of Justice Act, Massachusetts Bay Regulating Act, Boston Port Act, Quartering Act, and Quebec Act.

    ~On June 22, 1775 congress authorized the first printing of money solely for America $1 million in bills of credit, shorty after the 2nd Continental Congress

    Common Sense~Thomas Paine wrote a pamphlet entitled Common Sense, he outlined the reasons that he felt it was time for the colonies to part company with Great Britain and form their own independent nation.
    ~Common Sense was distributed throughout the colonies and influenced the colonists mind sets on how they should be run.
  • Declaration of Independence

    Declaration of Independence~The document was signed by 56 delegates to the Continental Congress
    ~The Declaration of Independence Preamble: John Adams wrote the customary preamble, which stated that King George III had rejected reconciliation and was hiring foreign mercenaries to use against the American colonies.
    ~On July 4, 1776, the wording of the Declaration of Independence was approved and sent to the printer for publication.
  • Battle of Guilford Courthouse

    Battle of Guilford~ Nathanael Greene was the commander of the American Forces
    ~Earl Cornwallis was the commander of the British Forces
    ~The British won because the Americans retreated after the batte
    ~Over 1000 Americans deserted the battle field that day

    British Surrender at Yorktown
    British Surrender~British General Cornwallis led his troops to Yorktown, Virginia where he planned to recieve supplies from England but when they had to surrender to the French and American troops who were already there waiting to attack.
  • Treaty of Paris Signed

    Treaty of Paris~United States was now independent.
    ~Mississippi river was the bourdary to the West.
    ~Atlantic Ocean was the boundary to the East.
    ~Canada was the boundary to the North.
    ~Spanish Florida was the boundary to the South.
    ~Each side had to repay all of their debts.
    ~Neither side lived up to the Treaty's rules.
