According to study.com, "The 11th Amendment to the US Constitution says that US courts cannot hear cases and make decisions against a state if it is sued by a citizen who lives in another state or a person who lives in another country." -

Elections of 1796 & 1800
These elections showed the nation that the election system had some weaknesses. The election of 1800 was the primary reason for the 12th amendment. -

VP and President are on different ballots. A VP must also fit the same requirements as the president. -

Temperance movements
During the early 1800's many religious groups started temperance movements. This lead to the 18th and 21st amendments. -
Emancipation Proclamation
The emancipation proclamation lead to the 13th Amendment. It freed slaves in southern non-border states. This meant there was still a great number of enslaved African Americans. Many people did not like that slavery still existed so the 13th Amendment was passed. -

Southern Reconstruction
Southern reconstruction led to a lot of discrimination against former slaves and African Americans in general. Examples of these include voting laws such as black codes. Congress saw issues with this and ratified the 15th Amendment. -
Amendment 13
The 13th Amendment was the amendment that banned slavery in all US states and territories. This was the first post civil war amendment. -
Civil Rights Act of 1866
Declared all male's born in the US would be granted citizenship. It had no mention of race or color. This led to the 14th Amendment -
Amendment 14
This amendment outlined citizenship, this was mostly for granting citizenship to former slaves. -

If the 15th why the 24th?
Well, after the 15th was in place racists found ways around this. Congress again saw problems with this because people were being stopped from performing their civil duty and later ratified the 24th amendment to ban poll taxes. -
Amendment 15
Said nobody can deny a US citizen the right to vote based on his or her sex, race, or status of being a former slave. -

Progressive Era
During this time period people wanted more government involvement. This lead to the 16th Amendment. -
Amendment 16
Stated federal gov. has the right to impose income taxes. -
Amendment 17
Senate consists of two senators from every state, these officials are in office for 6 years at a time. -
Amendment 18
This amendment prohibited the sale, manufacturing, and distribution of liquor in the US one year after the Amendment was passed. -

Reasons for the 20th Amendment
The main reason to push inauguration day back was to stop the lame duck session. Previously the official start date was March 4th. During 1923 a US senator named George Norris outlined the initial document which would later become the 20th Amendment. -
Amendment 19
No one can be denied the right to vote due to their sex. Congress has the privilege to pass any legislation to make this happen. -
Amendment 20
Set inauguration day to January instead of March. Also stated that if President dies, VP acts as Pres. -
Amendment 21
This Amendment repealed the 18th amendment which prohibited the distribution of alcohol. -

What Led to the 23rd Amendment.
Before the 23rd amendment was adopted the residents of DC were not able to vote. Eventually a man was fed up with this, his name Theodore W. Noyes. He fought to give the district of Columbia voting rights. Mostly it was the growing population that led to the adoption of the amendment. -

Set Presidential term limits to 2 terms. -

Vietnam War
The Vietnam war caused much destruction and turmoil during its time. Many kids were being drafted to fight, and many died years before they reached voting age. This is what led to the adoption of the 26th Amendment in 1971. -
Amendment 23
Said citizens of DC can vote. Set DC as the capitol of the US. -
Amendment 24
This Amendment abolished all poll taxes. -
Amendment 25
Explained what will happen if a president is removed from office. -
Amendment 26
Gave people who were 18 and older the right to vote and gave congress the right to pass any legislation in order to make this happen. -
Amendment 27
Congress cannot increase their wages between congressional sessions.
