    Role of Women in the War

    Women played a bug part in the war. An estimated 11000 women were helping both the French and Algerian sides. Women were used as spies, as the other side would not suspect women to be part of the army.

    Café Wars

    Although no official date can determine when it started, the Café Wars happened throughout the whole movement. The FLN and the MNA, two seperate nationalists movements. An estimated 5000 died in these battles which took place in Cafés and resturants.
  • Battle of Philippeville

    An attack on the mid sized town of Philippeville, planned and executed by the FLN, killed approximately 12000 muslims (according to the FLN). The plan used a mix of commando attacks from inside the town, and straight on attacks from the outside.

    The battle took place in El Djorf, which has some rough terrain. The leader of the ALN gathered 30000 troops, but the french had spies, so they knew when and where the meeting was taking place. The French circled the ALN, but the leader knew the ambush was coming. ALN left El Djorf victorious.

    Battle of Algiers

    Used guerrilla warfare in an urban setting. The FLN fought against the French Algerian police. The French deployed troops into Algiers which caused the conflict to become worse. Around 3000 could be potentially missing due to this battle.
  • Battle of Agounennda

    After leading his troops out of the Battle of Algiers, Dien Bien Phu walked into an ambush from the French army. The French used paratroopers to surprise the FLN, and managed to kill 96 and capture 12 FLN soldiers.
  • Operation Jumelles

    The French had a double mission of pacification and combat against the ALN. More than 2000 ALN soldiers were killed, while the French lost 213 men.
  • Battle of Bab El Oued

    The battle ended on April 6, 1962. The battle happened in the city of Algiers, in a middle-class area. Using helicopters, the French army used tear gas to push people off the roofs. This battle is an exmaple of modern technology and its use in war
