When Bella was 2 her mother decided to give up let her grandmother take care of her. Her mother didn't believe she was meeting her needs, so she moved away, and Bella didn't see her again. Erikson's first stage of life is the challenge between trust and mistrust. This involves not knowing whether or not to be trusting of the world or doubt its worth.

During Bella's toddler years her grandmother allowed her to choose her own outfits without judgement. Bella was able to express herself by picking out her own clothes based on what she wanted to wear. Erikson's second stage is the challenge between autonomy versus shame and doubt. This is the distinguishment between knowing that you are your own person, and it doesn't matter what other people think and feeling self-conscious or shame from your choices.

In the 7th grade Bella decided to sign up for the trash pick-up in the neighborhood. She wanted to do something good for her community and to serve the generations to come. In Erikson's 7th stage of life, the challenge is generativity versus stagnation. This is about whether or not middle adult people decide to contribute to the next generation or focus on themselves and what they want, resulting in stagnation.
